How loudspeaker technology works

Although loudspeakers can look very different on the outside, the underlying technology is fundamentally the same. When an audio signal reaches the speaker’s voice-coil, it creates a magnetic field that interacts with a permanent magnet. This pushes and pulls the diaphragm, which moves air and produces sound waves. The more accurately the diaphragm follows the electrical signal, the more realistic the sound becomes.

What is the difference between floorstanding and bookshelf speakers?
The difference between floorstanding speakers and bookshelf speakers is that floorstanders offer deeper bass and higher output, making them ideal for larger rooms. Bookshelf speakers are more compact and suit smaller spaces while still delivering excellent clarity and detail. For fuller, deeper bass, you can pair bookshelf speakers with a subwoofer, giving you low‑frequency performance that compact speakers alone can’t deliver.

Do DALI speakers work with any amplifier?

Do I need a subwoofer with my DALI speakers?
No, you don’t necessarily need to pair DALI speakers with a subwoofer. Many DALI floorstanding speakers offer full‑range performance on their own. However, adding a subwoofer can enhance low‑frequency impact for films or deliver deeper bass in larger rooms. Bookshelf speakers in particular benefit from pairing with a subwoofer if you want a fuller, more powerful low‑end response.

How far apart should I place my speakers for the best sound?
As a general guide, stereo speakers perform best when placed roughly the same distance apart as they are from your listening position, forming an equilateral triangle. Allowing some space from side and rear walls also helps improve clarity and soundstage width.

Can I mix speakers from different DALI speakers series?
Yes, you can mix speakers from different DALI speaker series. However, even though every one of our speakers follows the same eight sound design principles, any loudspeaker setup is only as good as its “weakest link”. So although, technically speaking, you could create a home cinema setup featuring a combination of SONIK 1 and DALI KORE speakers, it’s not something we would recommend. 

Should I toe-in loudspeakers from DALI?
You don’t need to toe‑in DALI loudspeakers. Our wide‑dispersion design is engineered to deliver a natural, balanced sound even when you’re not sitting directly in front of them. By optimising the off‑axis response, both the direct sound and the room reflections stay coherent, giving you a wider listening area, a larger “sweet spot” and far more freedom in how you position your speakers.
