BadstueRock - A record shop built on passion, community and great sound

For more than 50 years, BadstueRock has been part of Aarhus' music scene. Today, owner Björn Lydén is welcoming a new generation of music lovers and a new listening experience powered by DALI SONIK.
People come here after school or work, browse the shelves and talk about music. Those conversations are something you simply can't recreate online."
Step inside BadstueRock and you'll immediately notice that this is not a shop chasing trends.
The walls are lined with decades of music history. Vintage posters from the 1970s and 1980s share space with thousands of records, creating an atmosphere that feels increasingly rare in today's world.
"It's a bit of a time capsule," says owner Björn Lydén.
That feeling is entirely intentional. While friends have suggested modernising the store over the years, Björn has always wanted to preserve its character.
"The posters, the history and the atmosphere are part of the experience. People enjoy discovering places like this. For many visitors, especially tourists, it feels nostalgic because record shops like this no longer exist where they live."
More than five decades after opening in 1973, BadstueRock remains one of Denmark's most beloved independent record shops and a gathering place for music lovers of all ages.
From record collector to record shop owner
Björn's relationship with music began long before he arrived in Aarhus.
Growing up in Sweden, he was introduced to artists such as Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley at an early age. Records quickly became an obsession. As a child, he loved browsing record shops, discovering new music and building a collection of his own.
"I've always been fascinated by records," he says. "Not just the music itself, but the whole experience around it."
When he moved to Aarhus to study at university, a career in music felt more like a dream than a realistic plan. Then, in 2003, he landed a student job at Badstuerock.
At the time, CDs dominated the music industry and much of his work revolved around keeping the shop's extensive CD selection organised. But when he took over ownership in 2012, he made a decision that would shape the future of the business.
"One of the first things I did was bring vinyl back into the shop."
At the time, few people expected records to return in a meaningful way. Today, LPs account for a large part of the shop's sales and have become a symbol of a broader shift in how people want to experience music.

Why young people are embracing physical music
One of the biggest changes Björn has witnessed is not the return of vinyl itself, but the people buying it.
While BadstueRock still serves customers who have been visiting for decades, the shop now attracts a growing number of teenagers and young adults. Some arrive to buy their very first record after receiving a turntable as a confirmation or graduation gift. Others simply want a deeper connection to the music they love.
"We see customers as young as 12 or 13 coming in to buy records," says Björn. "That would have been difficult to imagine a few years ago."
For him, the appeal goes far beyond nostalgia.
A record collection becomes something personal. A reflection of identity, taste and curiosity. In an era dominated by streaming, owning music can feel like an active choice rather than a passive one.
"There is something special about putting on a record and really listening," he says. "It's a ritual."
The large artwork, the physical format and the distinctive analogue sound all contribute to an experience that many listeners feel is missing from digital platforms.
But perhaps most importantly, record shops offer something the online world cannot.
Community.
"People come here after school or work, browse the shelves and talk about music. They discover new artists from each other. Those conversations are incredibly important."
For Björn, those encounters are the most rewarding part of running the shop.
"If BadstueRock disappeared tomorrow, I would miss the customers the most. The conversations and the sense of community."

A place where music comes alive
Music has always been at the centre of the BadstueRock experience, which makes sound quality particularly important.
For years, the shop relied on a pair of DALI loudspeakers that had been faithfully serving customers since the 1990s. Recently, they were replaced with a new DALI SONIK installation.
The difference was immediate.
"The sound fills the shop much more evenly now," says Björn. "The music really comes alive."
The improved listening experience is changing the way customers engage with the music being played in the store. People stop, listen and ask questions. They stay longer. They become curious.
One busy Saturday, shortly after the new speakers were installed, Björn put on a newly released electronic album.
"People kept asking what we were playing."
Within less than an hour, six copies of the record had been sold.
"I honestly think the sound had something to do with it," he says with a smile. "When music sounds that good, people connect with it."
Björn's all-time favourites
Prince – Purple Rain
J Dilla – Donuts
Guided by Voices – Bee Thousand
Shared values
For Björn, the connection between BadstueRock and DALI goes beyond loudspeakers.
It is rooted in a shared commitment to quality, craftsmanship and a genuine passion for music.
"We care deeply about what we do, and I think DALI does too."
The new SONIK installation has elevated the listening experience throughout the store, but it has also reinforced something Björn has believed for years: when music is presented with care, people notice.
Whether it's a customer discovering their first record, a lifelong collector hunting for a rare pressing or a visitor simply stopping by to browse, great music deserves great sound.
And after more than 50 years, BadstueRock continues to prove that physical music, real-world experiences and meaningful human connections are every bit as important as they've always been.
With DALI SONIK helping bring every record to life, the future is sounding brighter than ever.
